Background of the Study
Gender-based violence (GBV) in conflict zones has become an alarming issue in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in areas affected by insurgencies and communal conflicts. Michika Local Government Area, located in Adamawa State, has witnessed significant episodes of violence due to its proximity to conflict-prone regions where Boko Haram activities have been prevalent (Usman & Ibrahim, 2023). The presence of armed groups and the breakdown of social structures have contributed to an increase in sexual violence, domestic abuse, forced marriages, and other forms of gender-based violence, disproportionately affecting women and girls (Okeke & Musa, 2024).
Research has shown that GBV in conflict zones is often used as a weapon of war, with insurgents targeting women to instill fear and weaken social cohesion (Adebayo, 2025). Beyond insurgent attacks, displaced women in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps often experience exploitation and abuse, exacerbating their vulnerability (Yakubu & Oladimeji, 2024). The psychological, economic, and social impacts of GBV in Michika LGA have been devastating, leading to long-term trauma, reduced economic participation, and breakdowns in community trust.
Despite interventions from the government and humanitarian agencies, GBV remains a persistent challenge in Michika LGA. Addressing this issue requires a critical evaluation of the factors contributing to gender-based violence, its effects on victims and communities, and strategies for effective intervention.
Statement of the Problem
The prevalence of GBV in Michika LGA has escalated due to years of insurgency and conflict. Many survivors face stigma, inadequate access to justice, and a lack of institutional support (Bashir & Adamu, 2023). The culture of silence surrounding gender-based violence prevents many victims from seeking justice, further enabling perpetrators (Suleiman & Nwachukwu, 2024).
Existing policies and interventions have not been fully effective in addressing the root causes of GBV or in providing comprehensive rehabilitation for survivors. This study aims to examine the specific forms of GBV occurring in Michika LGA, their impact on affected individuals and communities, and the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing gender-based violence in conflict settings.
Objectives of the Study
To identify the forms of gender-based violence prevalent in Michika LGA.
To examine the impact of GBV on individuals and communities in conflict zones.
To evaluate the effectiveness of intervention strategies aimed at reducing GBV in Michika LGA.
Research Questions
What are the common forms of gender-based violence occurring in Michika LGA?
How does gender-based violence impact individuals and communities in conflict zones?
What measures can be taken to effectively reduce GBV in Michika LGA?
Research Hypotheses
Gender-based violence is significantly prevalent in Michika LGA due to conflict.
The effects of GBV in Michika LGA negatively impact the socio-economic well-being of victims.
Existing intervention strategies have not significantly reduced GBV in Michika LGA.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on GBV in Michika LGA, analyzing its prevalence, effects, and intervention measures between 2015 and 2025. A key limitation is the sensitivity of the topic, which may make it difficult to collect firsthand testimonies from survivors due to stigma and trauma.
